Holding pattern was the first piece of tape music I wrote after leaving school. I had been given a gift of two bells from a friend, and that became the basis of the piece. Similar to my earlier pieces, I felt the piece had a very place like, ambient feel. In my mind at the time I had a very specific vision of being on a pier or dock, on a very calm, fogged in lake at night. The second half of the piece uses saxophone recordings and rather than evoking the place in mind, I thought of it as a reflection on that place. The piece was composed in Digital Performer.
